How to Choose the Right Building Material Supplier
Picking the right supplier for your project might be the most underrated decision a contractor makes. Get it right, and your crew shows up to a fully loaded jobsite, on schedule, every time. Vetting a supplier doesn't take long. It just takes asking the right questions before you sign on.
Three things that matter most
They keep their word. Promised delivery dates met, quantities accurate, substitutions disclosed upfront, not buried in the invoice.
They're fast to respond. The best suppliers answer the phone and give you a straight answer in 60 seconds.
They treat every project with the same urgency. Find suppliers who value the relationship, not just the transaction.
The pre-signup checklist
- Three contractor references. Ask what happened when something went wrong.
- Confirm response time expectations in writing.
- Verify they actually carry what you use.
- Check insurance and licensing.
- Search the yard's name with "review delivery" on Google. Patterns of complaints tell you more than testimonials.
Test run: the first order
Before going big, place a small order. Watch how they handle a mid-process change, who answers your questions, and what communication is like at every step. A test order tells you more than three pages of references.
How Lumby makes vetting easier
Suppliers on Lumby are approved by Lumby before they go live. Send one RFQ to several suppliers at once, see who responds quickly, and compare line-item quotes side by side.
